Some beginner questions...

Hi Everyone:

I feel a bit embarrassed asking a couple of beginner questions, but I am in India, and don't have a manual for the SD15, which I am using now. I am also using a 50mm f2.8 lens. The issue relates to the fact that my point & shoot camera would probably handle the conditions here better than my SD15. Or maybe it is my ignorance regarding appropriate settings and shooting strategies. So here it goes:

1. When I shoot outdoor scenes with extremes in contrast (shadow vs very brightly lit), one part gets quite overexposed or the other gets underexposed, with very little or no detail to speak of. Is there any way to mitigate these effects? I am in Old Delhi and the contrasts between inside the stalls of the outdoor market and the street scenes is immense.

2. A little girl had a doll she was holding that was a light pink in color. It was in the shadow. But with or without fill flash, it turned into a white blob. The pictures are thus useless. What can I do about that? Everything else was well exposed.

By the way, why would my point & shoot take better pictures in terms of contrast and exposure? Of course, when the SD15 is right on, I can get great detail and print much larger than with the P&S.

Thanks!

-Charles
