The Excellent Market Opportunity for Micro 4/3's Photography
22

In short, aging baby boomers.  I am a 67 year old, experienced wildlife photographer.  I have used Canon SLR equipment for over two decades and traveled the world with the full frame bodies and a 100-400 and a 500 F4.0.  This July I returned from a trip to Alaska to Katmai to photograph brown bears fishing for salmon, and realized I could no longer haul this gear through airports or down the trail.  While never dissatisfied with my Canon gear, I recently sold it all and purchased two Olympus E-M1 bodies and a few lenses.  I have pre-ordered the 40-150 F2.8 and 1.4 extender that will replace my 100-400, and as soon as the 300 F4.0 is released, this will replace my biggest Canon telephoto.

I don't think I am untypical.  I know several aging pros that have switched to Olympus or plan to do so soon.  Whether or not you are a wildlife photographer, as we age the weight and inconvenience of large SLRs continues to loom as a problem waiting to be solved.  Micro 4/3's cameras and lenses offer the solution with much less weight and pretty darn good image quality.  It is not surprising that Canon and Nikon are starting to discuss how to penetrate this growing market.  As for me, assuming I like the new Olympus Pro lenses, I am happy I made the switch.
