Has anyone here that has used the D300 or D300S replaced it with the D7100?

I just ordered the D7100 from B & H Photo Video. I feel like I have been waiting too long on Nikon. I have too many lens and other Nikon system goodies to move to another system.

You will enjoy the IQ improvement. My D300 was stolen 18 months ago... so I had to replace it with something. At first, I was leaning toward a used D700... but a clean D700 body was more expensive (at the time) than a new D7100 -- and The d700 was older technology. Plus, I also didn't want to spend even more money on new FX lenses (I have the 12-24, and the 17-55) -- so I stayed with DX. I'm very happy with the D7100. I typically don't pursue subjects that are moving fast, so the continuous shooting performance is not an issue for me. Excellent camera!

It is possible to partially work around that by using the fastest SD cards (95mb/s), 1.3 crop mode, 12 bit RAW and shooting in short bursts to allow the buffer to empty.

IIRC gives ~7 frames per burst.

The limitations are somewhat offset by excellent IQ, better high ISO performance and better AF.

Agree with you completely...yes the D300 feels better in the hand ....didn't keep mine however..

What I really like is the " easy ISO" function.

I have bought D7100 in 05/2013 after 6 years with D300. I have only one problem with D7100: my nose press WB button and I change WB instead of the aperture. I have to carefully put my head to the camera. :-D I do not miss anything in D7100 after 6 years with D300. I solved small buffer: SanDisk 95MB/s + 12 bit RAW + lossy compress. I love ISO change by the second roler on D7100 - it is the best ergonomic upgrade from D300. I have D300 in the chest. I used it twice a year from the time of D7100 owning. I cannot switch to full frame: Nikkors DX 10-24, DX 16-85, DX 17-55/2.8, DX 35/1.8, DX 55-300, DX Sigma 18-35/1.8, Nikkors FX 85/1.8, 70-200/2.8 VR I (which is "DX" too, because of very bad corners).

I am very satisfied, becous the absence of Nikkor AF-S DX 24/1.8G solved the (big and heavy) Sigma 18-35/1.8 and I think this zoom is better full open than Nikkor 24/1.8 would be.

I cannot use Sigma 18-35/1.8 instead od Nikkor 17-55/2.8 because Sigma is too short. Sigma is the set od single focals: 18/1.8 + 20/1.8 + 24/1.8 + 28/1.8 + 35/1.8. But i have two 35/1.8, one lightweight Nikkor DX 35/1.8 and one heavy Sigma 18-35/1.8. Sigma is somewhat better ... zoom. :-) I have bought Sigma DOck, I adjusted it one week and now .... perfect focusing Sigma.

I sold my D300 and bought an used D7100. The IQ step up is noticeable. I believe you will enjoy this camera unless you like using your camera for fast action photography.

Yes! Me too. :-) Why are my pictures all blue? At least I can recitify w/RAW.

Yes, my D300 is the second camera now, to a D7100. I am going to buy a second D7100, unless something comes out before I am ready.

Yup, same deal for me. My D2x is out as the back-up camera, with the D300 taking over from it. My D7100 is the new number one, until a D7200/9300 comes along to replace it (hopefully by spring 2015). FWIW, the third body is now an HD video camera, as that seems to be the way the market is headed...

I shoot a D7100 and a D300 side by side for a variety of sports (tennis, lacrosse, etc.). The D7100 is indeed capable of of 7 FPS in 12 bit RAW if shot in crop mode. With those settings, buffer depth is 10 frames. I use SanDisk's 95 mb/s cards and with those, the buffer clears so quickly that the depth isn't really an issue, at least for how I shoot. I truly believe that if the D7100's hypothetical successor could support SanDisk's new highest speed cards (I forgot exactly what they're rated at), discussions of buffer depth will really be a thing of the past since the speed at which they clear will be simply absurd.

I do miss the robust in-hand feel of the D300 when using the D7100, but that's really it. The IQ of the D7100 is truly amazing, especially with top lenses. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Thumbs up for the very handy info. So much so that you actually made me interested in partnering a D7100 with a D300 like you because almost half the time I use a 1.4x converter. For a quick image comparison I looked at

... and I preferred the look without the converter. Although to be sure, the iso performance should be maybe 1/2 stop worse. Was that a good trade-off to you vs. the sharpness of not using the converter and the better AF performance? I also note the 1.3 crop means the AF module covers the crop section more to the edge.

I also looked at feedback that suggests the D7100 clears the buffer about 2.5-3 images per second with the fastest cards.

7fps, raw 10 buffer, clearing 3 images a second might actually be fairly workable for me with cutting edge DX quality.

When the D800 came out, I sold one of my D300's. I had the D300's from the first day they were delivered here in Seattle. I was concerned about the loss of FPS, but found that the AF was so much better I could acquire AF quicker and maintain it better, so much so that my keeper rate went up a bit, shooting them side-by-side with the same subjects. Then when the D7100 was announced, I sold my #2 D300 for a D7100, found the same.

I also had zero issues switching between the 2 bodies. I, personally, find the switch not that difficult, far less than switching between either and my V3. Or worse yet, the times I have had to shoot football, Seahawks, with 2 bodies from different manufacturers. Somehow those things can be worked around, as can the "small" buffer in the D7100. Heck, I was shooting sports and wildlife with a D70, back in the day.

Enjoy the D7100.

D7100 is good for shooting wildlife but sucks shooting sports. So I bought a used Canon 7D for sports, quite a machine.

Now that the 7DII is coming out, I'm 99% going to switch back to the dark side, totally. The 1% is unless Nikon announces the D400 in near future.

Here's why (23 frames animation GIF, click on link if the embedded GIF doesn't work). I've tried everything on D7100, RAW only, cropped mode, 95Mb/s Sandisk card, nope.
