650D can't keep up with running dog

All my life, I have shot frame by frame. Focus, compose, shoot. Repeat.

Recently, I discovered that the DSLRs of today were meant to be used with a different paradigm. They were meant to be used like a machine gun. AI Servo. Continuous shooting. Just gun it, then discard the frames you don't like.

I have discovered, however, that the 650D is mostly unsuccessful at keeping my Golden Labrador in focus when he is moving. Almost all frames shot like this -- with him running towards me -- were out of focus.

Is this normal, or is there a particular combination of settings that solves the problem?
