Basically a lot of the cheaper Canon and Nikon options are lens designs they released in the 80's and 90's. Though they've made improved versions, they still sell the older versions.

Had Sony kept doing the same with a lot of the Minolta lenses, they'd have a similar selection. There are a few examples where they did this such as the 100mm macro, where the $750 Sony version is optically the same as a $300-400 Minolta version, just in a different package.

As others have said, tell us what you're looking for and we can make suggestions. You can also check dyxum.com for user reviews, ratings, and sample galleries. I also find that Flickr has a lot of groups dedicated to specific lenses. So you can look there to get a feel for what a lens might offer you in performance.
