Actually scratching the glass is very unusual, but the multicoating on lenses is quite delicate. I've seen many instances of newcomers scrubbing and cleaning their lenses obsessively until they produce microscratches or even scrub away the multicoating! It takes awhile for folks to learn to just leave a lens the heck alone unless there is a juicy fingerprint or big goober on it.

A hard lens hood generally provides all the protection a lens will need.
