What kind of options do I have for this situation?

I tried to come up with a descriptive title but couldn't, sorry!

Basically, I need a solution that allows me to take overhead photos of small nearby crowds. To put it simply, imagine a monopod held up high with a head tilting downwards. I was wondering though, are there some more specialized solutions? Some sort of "boom"? Or is a tilt-head monopod my best option?

Portability is an important factor. Reliability is another (the last thing I'd want is to throw a D700 and a 14-24 on the head of the people below )

The length needed isn't more than 1.5-2m (4-6 ft)
