I have used D7100 and D610 with same lenses.  For equal Dof you use 2.0 on D7100 and 2.8 on D610. Lower ISO noice compensates for smaller aperture with FX.

But pretty much every lens is better at 2.8 then 2.0. also Bigger sensor resolves better on same lens. For example 85mm 1.8G is even at same aperture sharper on D610. My tests and dxo and others confirm it.

Also you get a lot more control over Dof.

You get much better view trough viewfinder.

D5300 doesnt have enough buttons on it. If you want to have control over setting while shooting you constantly need to go trough menus.  Also there's no U profiles to store your settings for different scenarios. For example with flash and without.

Ohh and though D7100 has better AF system compared to D610, i'ts buffer sux on it. If you shoot raw you can shoot 1 sek (around 6 pics)only and its full.  So its very frustrating for sports.

As for Dof advantage with DX. DF has like 1,5 times  more DoF but ISO noise on FX is about twice or more as good.  Also when you push raw files, D610 files have more latitude specially when ISO starts to raise.

D7100 advantages over D610 is better AF system and 1 click 100% zoom button for fast image review between shots.

Very good summary. I switched from aps-c to d610 and would never go back. forget about the weight and little more cost ( had also on apsc lenses like 70-200f4 and 17-55f2.8 to get good results). d610 is a joy to use and the results are much better. I enjoy photography much more with d610 and I use the camera more often than before I switched to FF. It's a kind of more addicted to ohotography. if I want to go light I mount a 50 1.8 or a 28 1.8 on my d610.
d610 is a fantastic camera and if you buy good lenses they will not loose value (i sold my canon 70-200 after 4 years for a higher price ) . compared the cost with a car, FF is cheap, even with some good glass.
