While some prefer prime lenses, zoom lenses can be very sharp and most pros and serious amateurs use them as well as primes.

If you have the 18-55 kit zoom lens you already have a wide-angle lens. 18mm is wide-angle. I think what you want is an ultrawide lens. The Canon 10-18 is supposed to be a good lens (I'm a Nikon user) at a good price. Others worth considering include the Sigma 8-16 and 10-20 and the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. I have the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 and I like it a lot, but I shoot a lot of interiors so today I would get the faster Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.

If you don't have the 18-55 IS, I recommend getting it or the Canon 18-135 IS before getting an ultrawide.
