Need strategies for faster, more accurate manual focusing in low light

I recently bought a bundle of FD lenses and a Lens Turbo for my C3, and while it's great to be able to shoot handheld in the dark my focus hit rate is below 50% on wide open people shots. MF assist is kind of tricky as things look relatively in focus on the screen, but aren't once I see the picture even at ~25%. Are there any drills or anything I can do to increase my hit rate and better my MF technique?
