Is film more suitable medium in long exposure photography?

Recently Nikon has recalled D810 due to thermal noise issue and it has occurred to me there is no such thing as thermal noise in film photography. Let’s say you take a picture of night scenery and it requires long exposure then digital photography will bring about thermal noise issue. So in a situation of photography which requires long exposure film may be more suitable medium to take pictures. What is your opinion about this?

P.S.: It will be appreciated if you comment also on the limitation of digital sensors.
