There are a few things, Program mode is selecting Aperture and shutter based on the light meter, likely what it is doing is selecting a low aperture which will cause the focus area to be smaller then you would have on the point and shoot.

the Sensor in a point and shoot is very small which means it's focal plane is very large, on a NX the sensor is much larger which means the aperture is much bigger and so the focal plane is smaller.

so taking the camera out of program and putting it in A mode, auto ISO will solve this for you... the larger the Aperture number (f number) the large your focal plane will be and the sharper the image will be (less softness)

as has been mentioned f8 - f12 is the range you should be looking for. If it is too dark, then lower the f number.

Hope this helps.

First, I want to say that the images were not completely out of focus, they were just too soft.  Some would be in focus in the middle but soft around the edges, while others were soft all over.

If you read down, you'll see that I solved the problem by hiking the ISO to 400 (the camera had been selecting 200 when left to its own devices).  Before hiking the ISO to 400, the camera was using F values of 3.5 to 4.5.  After hiking the ISO, the F values increased to 4.5 to 5.6 (which means a smaller aperture, right?).  That seems to have fixed the problem.  I don't think that an F value of 8 or more is really needed in this case.

I'm a little disappointed that the camera itself couldn't figure out that the values it was using would result in soft images; but as long as I was able to fix it, I'm happy.

Thanks for sharing!
