Selfies: Harmless fun, or silent killer?

Just a continuation as I didn't get to reply to some of the recent content.

It's simple. The "craze" is driven by the social media phenomenon to have a constant stream of content. many people don't really have much to say. They don't have a creative eye for taking photos of interesting subjects. So, to fulfill the desire to be a constant content contributor they publish selfies. No thought necessary - which is why people so often have the exact same facial expression in so many of their selfies. You will notice that people involved in social media with a lot to say don't post a lot of selfies. The "selfie" crowd wants to be in the "in" crowd - which today means social media but can't think of enough to say or do that is interesting content.

Hence, selfies as a "craze: rather than the traditional photo where the photographer included themselves because it was a special occasion or special gathering of friends.

Haha I laughed so hard reading this. Good point though and good theory. I almost liken them to the Borg from star trek. This need to be a hive mind is odd and I don't identify. That alone is fine as long as it doesn't cause problems, not sure we can say that though. At least im teaching my kids the same values I was taught, which don't include superficial vanity above all.
