Good lens for the money but not quite for some serious photography!

Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD has all those goodies to offer at an affordable price for amateurs and enthusiasts alike. It has good zoom covering the telephoto range required for some bird photography. Build quality is decent with nice feel to it and the zoom and the focus rings are smooth. Vibration Compensation (VC) worked well in most of the shots I took.

Pros:

1. Affordable zoom lens

2. Nice build quality (Not weather sealed though)

3. Good sharpness in the center of the image throughout the zoom range

4. Vibration Compensation (VC) good up to 2.5 to 3 stops (Needs a sturdy tripod in most low light conditions for better results)

5. Good color reproduction in the shots I took

6. Fast auto focus in bright/day light situations. Thanks to the fast and quiet Ultrasonic Drive (USD) from Tamron

Cons:

1. Slow and variable aperture not suitable for nice out of focus backgrounds

2. Focus hunting in low light

3. Pretty soft at the longer end of the zoom (270 mm to 300 mm) and soft at the edges of the frame throughout its focal range

4. Visible chromatic aberration in some contrasty shots

This lens has its advantages and disadvantages and it really depends on the users and what type of work they are going to use this lens for. This focal range is good for portraits, animal and bird photography. But, certainly not for the professionals. This lens has its limitations mainly in low light and definitely not as sharp as other Canon/Nikon lenses out there.

Definitely worth a try if you are trying to get into this zoom range and if you never had a lens in this zoom range. Its very affordable too!
