Optics and camera design question

Can anyone tell me if it is theoretically possible to achieve remote location of a video camera by using a fiber optic routed between the observation point and the lens of the video camera?

For example, would it be possible to attach an iPhone camera module to a fiber optic and then run the optic into a hostile environment that's otherwise inhospitable to camera electronics?

I hardly know the first thing about optics and how things like camera focusing work.  So I was hoping someone here might know more and what fundamental issues might exist to prevent the success of such an arrangement.  Thank you for any assistance you could provide.
