DXOMark interesting lens conclusions

Wasting a bit of precious time in useless analysis

Let's assume:

1) the DXOMark lens conclusions & sharpness numbers are accurate & a good yardstick

2) sharpness is the only important characteristic (not true)

3) DXOMark sharpness numbers for zooms are the numbers throughout their range

Having taken these 3 assumptions - now check http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Ratings/Optical-Metric-Scores - do filter by cameras and select the camera to be D800E (to compare on one high resolution camera). Now forget every other parameter except sharpness numbers.

The conclusions that I find interesting - and probably slightly different than what many in this forum say or is somewhat generally held opinion (I may be wrong about the generally held opinion):

1) Nikon 85mm f/1.4g = 30; Nikon 85mm f/1.8g = 27:

Generally held opinion - the 1.8g is the sharper lens (the 1.4g excels on bokeh).

2) Nikon 18-35mm g = 24; Nikon 14-24 = 24; Nikon 20mm 2.8D = 21; Zeiss 15mm = 23; Zeiss 21mm = 19; Zeiss 18mm = 17:

Generally held opinion: The Nikon 20mm is trash - especially compared to the Zeiss 21mm. Zeiss 21mm is far superior to Zeiss 18mm - with the above numbers its only marginally superior.

Opinion held in certain quarters: Zeiss 21mm is superior or at least comparable to the 14-24. Going by DXO (and the 3 assumptions) - even the 18-35mm g is superior.

3) Nikon 70-200mm f/4g = 30 (quite high for a zoom - same as the highly regarded Sigma 35mm ART though that is comparing apples to oranges)

4) Nikon 180mm f/2.8 = 14 (quite low for a well regarded prime)

Anyway - end of an idle analysis :-).
