R means RC control.

BUT the FL50 appears not to have a slave mode. It has auto and manual, and that's it.

I may be incorrect, but I believe the FL50 does not include RC slave mode whereas the FL50R does.

FL-50 = no slave modes at all, just a hot-shoe flash (same as FL-36). TTL, TTL FP, Auto and Manual modes available when in the hot-shoe.

FL-50R = RC control mode, plus S1 dumb slave mode (same as FL-36R and FL-600R). TTL, TTL FP, Auto and Manual modes available when in the hot-shoe or as RC slave.

FL-300R = RC control mode but no S1 dumb slave mode. TTL and Manual flash only in hot-shoe or RC control (no FP mode at all and no Auto flash mode).

The "R" in the name means that RC control is incorporated.

All flash user manuals found from here
