5D Mark III viewfinder darker when battery removed

Hey guys, is it normal that the viewfinder of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is darker when the battery is removed from the camera? I have the Canon 17-40mm f/4 lens attached and have it wide open. Then I switch off the camera and take a look through the viewfinder, everything appears normal. As soon as I take out the battery, the image through the viewfinder gets much darker and looks as if the lens is stopped down. If I insert the battery, the image is brigher again. This all happens with the camera switched off.
