Gorillapod for travel or alternative?

I have an older Gorillapod that I have used with mixed success when traveling in the past.  One of the problems is that it does not have a ballhead (and no way to attach one), which makes framing a shot very difficult.  Does anyone have experience with the newer ones?  Would you recommend it for overseas travel or have any suggestions for very light and small alternatives?

I have a decent carbon fiber travel tripod that is a little under 4 pounds with the ballhead and folds up to about 16 inches in the bag, but I just don't see myself carrying it around with me on a regular basis on a vacation.
