Do manufacturers need retailers?

Many markets are being served by "The Canon Store" "..Sony Store" .."Fuji Store", all online, all selling to retail consumers. Retailers are stocking less and less product, special ordering the item you want, once they have a paid-in-full sale. You didn't get to touchy-feel it in store prior to ordering, so you did the research and told the salesperson (order taker) what you wanted and at what price. The conventional retail paradigm is showcases stocked with cameras (etc.) for the customer to feel and compare, receive advice from a knowledgeable sales associate, and ultimately purchase. The model is broken. So, I submit, why do the manufacturers even bother dealing with retailers to move product? Isn't it just another layer of profit taking? The manufacturers could keep the same profit amount, while selling at lower retail.
