Anyone use a Nikon C-PL2s 39mm drop-in polarizing filter on a 400mm f/3.5?

I have a Nikon C-PL2s (the 39mm drop-in circular polarizing filter) and a Nikon 400mm f/3.5.  Cannot find a C-PL1s for sale at any price (not that I'm going to pay any price), but I have a C-PL2s. It will drop in and lock, but there's a gap between the top and the lens.

I'm thinking of using thick foam to cover the gap and provide some pressure.

Does anyone have experience with this combination?

I figure if it works, then I could pick up the 300mm it goes with and have the filter available for both lenses.

Anyone ever buy a lens to fit a filter?  Interesting concept, but for these prices it's also somewhat reasonable.
