Is Nikkor 300m f4 af-s still relevant?

Buying into Nikon Fx (d610) at present as an update to my lumix gx7,

  • Bought a Samyang 14mm as a landscape
  • Bought a Nikon 50mm f1.8 as a walk around lens and for general portraits

Looking for something longer and was looking at the 70-200 f4 however for less money I can get the 300mm f4 and I think for birds and wildlife this may be better as it is longer and my assumption is that optically primes are better.

However most of the reviews are older, I am used to MFT where most of the lenses are new and I was just wondering if the 300mm f4 would still be a sensible purchase. Planning on  using it with a monopod when out and about

Next spring  I may add a Nikon 85mm f1.8 so I dont have a huge hole in my FLs.

Advice most gratefully appreciated, dislike being a newbie.

Thanks in advance
