I believe a lot of people understand what nikon did with the 58. But most of who understands also looks for the better compromise and balance in a lens when their sole purpose is not near wide open photography at this focal lens. And most also prefer to use other focals for this type of photography like 35 or 85 or 135, where there are better alternatives in terms of balance between near wide open and the rest of the range of use.

Unfortunately, the 58 is not enough if a person looks for wide use at this focal with one lens. And given the price, it is not easy to combine with another 50 for most as well. It is a specialty lens and I guess many are surprised that nikon did not introduce a less specialty normal 1.4 as replacement of the current 50g.
