I am pretty sure both Canon and Nikon have made significant strides in ISO performance over the last couple generations of bodies. A few months ago I upgraded from a D300s (same sensor as your D90 if I'm not mistaken) to a D610. That's an upgrade from DX to FX and 12 MP to 24 MP. My experience is that ISO 6400 on the D610 looks as good or better than ISO 800 on the D300s. My flickr page has a couple images at ISO 6400 - a hovering bee and a black bear - if you want to see some examples.

At any rate, I think the jump from 2008 technology to 2014 technology is going to be a pleasant surprise regardless of which brand you choose. If you decide to stick with Nikon, then I would post a separate thread on the Nikon SLR Lens Talk forum to answer your lens questions.
