Trouble with NX1000 and third-party flash units

I am trying out two third-party flash units with my NX1000:

  • A Sigma EF-500 DG Super that I had on an old Nikon D50
  • A newer Changyin CY-20 that I picked up on eBay because the listing specifically mentioned the NX1000 in the title (although I now suspect there is nothing Samsung-specific about this flash)

The problem is, the camera never recognizes that the flash units are attached (the flash option remains greyed out in the menu options). The only way I can get the flash to fire is in program mode, but the camera still ignores the presence of the flash and the pictures turn out way overexposed.

I can dial back exposure compensation to -3, but the pictures are still overexposed. In the case of the Sigma, I can put the flash in manual mode and make adjustments there, but I still haven't been able to get it dim enough to overcome the camera thinking that there is no flash available. In any case, the camera shouldn't be cranking up ISO when it's unnecessary.

With the CY-20, it has two modes (on/off) so adjustment on the flash is a moot point.

Any ideas? I was trying to get away with not spending $150+ on a Samsung flash to get bounce.
