No reason why one cannot get sharp images, leaving ISO/noise issues aside, with the 40STM in low light. Put the camera on AutoISO so it keeps the shutter speed above 1/60 at all times, and shoot in Av at f/2.8. The limitating factor then will be the camera's ISO/noise performance.

Having said that, the Sigma 18-35's max aperture of f/1.8 lets you capture images at lower ISO relative to f/2.8 lenses. Here's one with the Sigma, wide open at f/1.8 in low light, resulting in an ISO4000 image
