Stuck in M mode: OM D EM-5

My OMD EM-5 seems to be stuck in M mode. Regardless of whether I set the mode dial to P, A, or S the camera stays in M. It works in auto, but that is not how I shoot.

If I put in auto and then move the mode dial to P, A, or S it will at first go into S mode, but as soon as a move the exposure compensation dial it goes right into M.

I am using only Olympus brand lenses and batteries and my firmware is current.

My troubleshooting has had no positive results. After consulting the owner's manual and finding nothing helpful I tried the following:

turned on and off

removed the battery

removed the SD card

changed lenses

reset basic functions to default (hated to do this)

I am extremely frustrated. This happening on my first visit to Tuscany, and compromising opportunities for some wonderful photos. I have already sent this camera back to Olympus for a time consuming and costly service once already.

Am I missing something which should be obvious or is my camera on the fritz again?

any help appreciated!
