A faster lens would help, like a 35F2IS or a lens with an even wider aperture. I use my 35F2 IS for low light, with ISO ranging from 800 to 1600 (or higher) depending on lighting. For low light people photos, I like shutter speeds of  at least 1/60 for the 35 on a crop.

You would benefit from a fast prime. F2.8 is not fast enough on a crop if shooting at night in my house. F2 will give you faster shutter speeds or let you shoot at lower ISO.
