While it's sad to see the demise of film, chemicals and darkroom work...

Why anyone could still be sad about that is puzzling. especially since digital tech has been advancing in leaps and bounds and could soon surpass film many times over. Move forward.

Of course film and chemicals in darkness can make a fascinating hobby or adventure in itself, but that is a different matter altogether.

... I have become adept at digital photography, but it is nowhere near as enjoyable as working in the darkroom.

That's precisely what I meant too. It's a facinating adventure in itself, giving one immeasurable and unmatched joy.

But of course having mastered digital, you would not be 'sad' to have gone that path, as the OP said.

Depth has been the mizzing dimenzion for long enough. But still, few are bothered with 3D.
My favourite 3D-pair site:-

I'm in the process of setting up a work area to handle Albumen printing and Gum Bichromate printing from digital negatives of film scans and digital masters.  Something about the alt processes and the darkroom in general.  Will be cool to be able to give couples a gum print from a shot of their session.
