That pretty much sums up what I did and experienced with other local photographers.  I strted photograhing weddings in 1988.  All formals where done with my Mamiya RB67.  General shots where done on 35mm....for images that never went beyond 5x7 or so.  It wasn't until we started seeing the large scale adoption of films like Fuji Reala and Kodak PMC that I found 35mm adequate enough for 8x10.

Part of the problem is that those never in the industry of try to equate what they saw in a magazine from 35 to what professional quality was for production work.  I later switched to Fuji's 160 and 400 films for portraiture and weddings.  Now I tend to stay with Fuji Pro 400H in 35 and 120, Kodak Portra 400 and Ilford FP4 and Delta 3200.  I use formats from 110 thru 4x5 to get the look I desire.

35mm for most of thr 80's was simply a low quality amateur format for weddings.
