Low-light shooting with the NX30

I was first assistant on a promo shoot for a local production of The Glass Menagerie the other week. Mostly I was too busy holding light stands and dragging heavy objects around, but I also shot a little behind-the-scenes and B-roll.

Most of the shoot took place in a very dark interior room with no windows. To get an ambient light shot I would have needed very, very long exposures, and most of the time I was shooting one-handed with no tripod while I was holding a flash angled overhead with the other hand so that wasn't an option. So instead, I cheated -- I set a half-second exposure and tried to guess when the photographer was going to trigger his flash. Out of about two or three hundred tries I caught one good one.

Later we brought all the lights down and lit the scene with a single candle. This is where I was happy I brought a lens that could open as wide as f/1.8. Tough to beat a candle for a single light source for drama.

We added a second candle to fill out Isa's hair and face, and put a mug in front of it to block it the light from spilling all over the place. Personally I like the single-candle shot better, but this one was good too.
