A standard PC Sync Port is a simple Positive (center) and Negative (body) connector. There is no third connection. A typical PC Sync cable uses a two conductor plug on the opposite end. A three conductor plug may not make the proper connection in the jack.

Bingo! That is exactly what is happening to ktownbill if his 3.5mm jack is a stereo jack. It should be a mono jack.

ktownbillm it is simple to test whether or not the cord you have is the correct one.  Simply plug the cord into your V5 then short out the PC plug contacts on the other end of the cord with a paper clip or other wire.  If the off-camera flash fires then the cord is fine, if not then your stereo jack needs to be rewired or replaced with a mono one.

If you rewire your stereo jack leave the central connection alone and jumper the two channels together with a short piece of wire.  In this image the central connection is the yellow one, the two channels are the red and green ones.
