No that's not how it works. What you do is give them what they want and EXTEND that beyond. Apple in your example gave people what they wanted an MP3 player called the iPod, they just extended its use to iTunes music store–that's how new ideas happen-gradual change rather than disruption of the customer space.

before the iPod few people knew about or cared about MP3 players.

Since the advent of digital you really need to offer the extras that most clients call for, if you don't you'll soon find those people voting with their feet

or you could have a photo business that shows beautiful examples of images that only have light retouching done to them and convince the customer that that is better.

That can be done too, but in reality people want eyes opening on shots where they blink, they expect the tools of the last 15 years and for you to be proficient in their use.

the point though was that it is still up to the photographer how far he wishes to take such a thing. Without any boundaries you'd be a slave to the lowest expressions of photography.

I can tell you just about everyone is aware of what digital can do, you have your attitude 'I'll do it my way' and they'll just find someone who will offer them the opening eyes, slimming down and the other digital tools.

You've never been a working pro have you?

I think it is simply wrong that you are letting customers define the quality of your work. How far or low will you let them take you?

They don't 'define' it they are it!

Again, look to Apple hardware.
