Advice for not missing anything in Washington DC

I will be travelling with the family to Washington DC this summer for a few days (only), what interests me most are the advices on great places to shoot.

Whats safe and what is not, best times, what to avoid etc...

(and also the best BLT sandwich experience possible, it's my wife's all time favorite)

I plan to visit the Mall and also the annexe to the Air&Space near Dulles, and probably Potomac Mills for shopping.

I'm planning to take a travel tripod that can convert into a monopod for night shots, possibly 14L or 17-40L, 15FE and probably 70-200II.

Will try to borrow a 70-200f/4 version to gain a little weight if possible ?!?
And also the X100S for times when being light/stealthy is required...
Other advices welcomed

So people that are knowledgeable of DC and area let's hear it !!!!

Thanks in advance.
