Nikon Commander preflash

2. The master pop up would trigger via visible light, as it is a visible light flash. however, if set to-- then it will not show up in the image or meter reading.

Even when set to "--" the pop up's commander preflash can register in the image because the last part of the commander preflash is the signal to fire and that happens when the shutter is open.

You may notice the pop up's contribution when shooting at close distances or as an additional catchlight in your subject's eyes.  For this reason Nikon offers the SG-3IR IR panel which blocks most of the pop up's visible light. There are some DIY alternatives to the SG-3IR.

The Nikon SU-800 controller uses an IR emitter for its commander signal since it isn't a flash.   All the flashes with commander capability use their flash tube which produces some IR content in addition to their normal visible light unfortunately.
