Question about fill-flash.

I have a T2i and 420EX flash.  I'm about to take some senior pictures of my grandson during a very hot day, but with the forecast of clouds.  Is using fill-flash a good idea (even on sunny occasions)?  I have never used a shoe-mounted flash before.  So not so sure this is the right time to try.   I've always had one, but never used it.  So if you recommend I do use it (a 420EX), is there any recommended settings where I can just set it, and not worry about it?  I'll have enough thought process in composing the shot.  If I also need to deal with changing mechanical settings, it will simply not work for me.

Thanks.
