Advice on NX3000 + 30 f2 for 2nd system
1

Hi,

I'm in NYC on vacation and I left my DSLR (Nikon D300) at home and took my Canon ELPH Compact which is way too basic for me and I think I'd really like to have a small mirrorless camera that has DSLR like features but weights less.  My DSLR is old and rather than upgrade it (it was around $1600 new I believe) I think I prefer to keep it for portraits and get a smaller lighter alternative.  If it weren't for my fast primes I'd get rid of the DSLR all together.

I was interested in the Sony RX100 but the newest model is $800 and for that price I could get something with interchangeable lenses.  So I was considering the Sony NEX-6 (or the newer but much more expensive A6000) and the Samsung NX300.

While researching the NX300 I see the NX3000 comes with a 16-50 which I really like in the Sony kits.  I use 24mm equivalent all the time with my compact.  To get the 16-50 I'd have to get the NX3000 which is not quite as good of a camera.

I'd like to get some feedback on what I've written so far and I have a few questions about the Samsung NX300 & 3000:

The first question is about B&W.  My old LX-3 has a super B&W mode called "dynamic B&W" what I loved.  The Sony RX100 has a similar mode and the results are great.  I know PP can do better but I hate messing with images so I prefer to do all in camera whenever possible.  Does Samsung have a very high-contrat B&W mode?

The next question is about digital zoom.  I think I only really need about 6MP.  That's what i have my compact set for.  On my DSLR it only has 12MP and that's never been a limitation for me.  So if i set my camera to 8 or 10MP can I get an extra 2x zoom?  The reason I've resisted getting any other system is because the 18-200 lenses are around $800.  If I can get 2-4x zoom out of the kit lens, then that'd meet my needs.

On my LX3 to get the zoom I have to set the MP much lower and that sucks because when shooting all day you don't know ahead of time when you'll need the extra zoom and then when you need it you have to fiddle around in the menus.  For me the ideal camera would let you shoot 20MP and when you need digital zoom it automatically drops down to 10MP or 6MP etc.   Does the Samsung do this?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for your feedback.  I plan to go to B&H to try them out but I want to do my homework first.  We only have a few more days in NYC before moving on.
