The difference in sharpness wide open is noticeable. Of course, one stop difference.

not fair, the photo with 16-35 f2.8II was taken with f2.8 aperture, and f4.0IS with f4.0. i am sure that is why the f2.8 shot looks brighter and better. will, i am for the f2.8II in this comparison having IS in this super WA doesn't move me. however, i have heard good things about the newer f4.0 IS version from many people in this forum so i won't disparage it. in fact, if i were to purchase another canon "L" lens (already own about 16 ) it'll be either 135 f2.0 or the new 16-35 f4.0 IS, in that order!
