I'm actually drawn more to the color image - to me the redness of his face and the oldish looking eyes better shows a level of wear-and-tear/ruggedness in this particular case. Nice improvisation with the light, BTW - sometimes we just have to make do with what we have and you did well.
Final note: He looks like he could be from Texas, but I'll bet the accent is a bit different!
