Credit card warranty, what does it cover for cameras/lenses

Many credit cards (not debit cards) will double the warranty of most purchases. What I'm curious to know is, once the standard factory warranty expires (in a year for Canon USA), how is the second year covered?

Is it that you still send the camera and/or lens to Canon, they perform the warranty service, bill your credit card and then the credit card company issues a credit? Or does the credit card company tell you to send it elsewhere and they take care of the details.

Also, has anyone utilized this sort of benefit before? If so, how well does it work out?
