I was able to get a 50mm f2.8 for under $100, so I decided to go for it.

wow, they really came down in price!

It came today and I am delighted with it! Very sharp, lovely color rendition, very nice bokeh....and it focuses really rapidly on the LAEA4; certainly not the usual pokey macro focus hunting I have had with some other AF macro lenses on other cameras in past.

the adapter you mentioned basically is an extension tube with the AF module of one of the SLT cameras, if i'm not mistaken. so yes, it shouldn't be too shabby.

I don't usually use flash, so I'm not going to worry about the purple blob thing, as I think it will be a non-issue for me (I have a 50mm f1.7 that I would probably use in a flash type situation before I used the macro 50, so unless that one has it too, I should be good).

plus the problem is not obvious in each and every flash picture. a few days ago i messed around with the 50/2.8 and a flash and the pictures came out quite good.

The 100mm was tempting, but at about $350ish for one in good shape, I thought I should probably just wait and see what the native version is going to be like when it comes out in the next few months.
I'd rather save up for the FE mount version, which I would expect will have IS, amongst other things, than spend on an A mount version right now. For my purposes, I expect I will just fool around happily with the 50mm for the rest of this summer, and use my adapted telephotos for the time being if I want longer flower shots....not ideal, but it will work fine for the time being.

i paid more than 350.- and think it is worth the money. but i can understand your reasoning.

Thanks for the helpful comments!

you're welcome.
