Well actually, it IS exactly what you want! It all depends upon how you place the duplicate frames.

The only difference is that you don't layer the same duplicate frame a few frames back. What you do instead is duplicate the layer as I explained earlier, THEN, on the duplicate layer, move the action back a few frames so that it's happening earlier, THEN move that layer back until the earlier action is happening after the layer beneath it.

Repeat as required. It's a basic editing technique. All the Go Pro does is teach people not the think.  It hasn't invented a new technique.
