Perimeter Vs. Center Focus Point?

Let's say you're shooting a sitting duck or other semi-stationary subject and you want to have the subject off-center, as by following the rule of thirds. Are you better off using a perimeter focus point "on" the subject or using the center focus point and then recomposing? Is there a difference in terms of sharpness?

I haven't been able to find an answer to this, and it's not a big deal, but my wife asked me about it and now I'm curious. I always use the center point for focusing, but if my subject is off-center perhaps recomposing puts it in a less-sharp "part of the lens"(?). If it's too little a difference to worry about, just say so.

Thanks, Brian I.M.
