We have roundabouts in Australia and they work fairly well, but get in a mess when the intersection gets too busy, so then they are converted to lights.

Lights on roundabouts really don't work they just cause traffic jams, I recall one set of about 5 lights on one roundabout that caused chaos and were switched off. Quite often on normal intersections when the lights fail the traffic moves more freely.

No, not lights added to a roundabout but the entire centre ripped out and converted to a regular cross intersection with proper traffic lights.

In some cases they have added lights to roundabouts and yes, they don't work. Particularly those lights that only come into life automatically when the traffic is heavy. So with no notice the traffic lights turn on or all go black and traffic can be anywhere at the time, terribly confusing. Often people don't realise that the lights have started operating and drive through red because they were busy watching traffic and not the lights.
