When will we reach Max Pixels?

With the new Nikon 810 coming with a 36 MP sensor, the Sony A7R similarly endowed and even entry level DSLR's starting with 20 MP sensors, are we getting close to the point, according to the rules of diminishing returns, where increasing the camera pixel count achieves nothing more than allowing the manufacturer bragging rights?

Is there a point, considering the issues of noise, storage space, frame rate and processing speed that an increase in pixel count entails, a sensible limit for the number of sensor pixels, above which it is pointless to go. If so what would that value be?

Or do you think there will always be a need for more pixels in your camera?
