The image with the white car looks very capably exposed to me. The camera has preserved the highlights, as I'd hope it would. So I'd say the metering system has done its job admirably.

The problem is that the blacks are blocking up, and this is due to the shape of the tone curve being applied when creating the jpgs. See here for some examples. I'd just shoot RAW and be done with it, but if you want to stick with jpgs, one of the dynamic range expansion modes should help.

As for the flash, you might try using flash exposure compensation.
