Photozone - 16-35 f4 IS vs Nikkor 14-24

Photozone just tested the new 16-35 IS. I'm highly interested in this lens to replace my 17-40L, as I'm sure are many here. Just for the heck of it, I compared the resolution, distortion, vignetting and CA graphs to see how they compared. These lenses are not directly comparable on focal lengths and apertured, but you can get a good idea.

For all graphs the Canon is on the left, Nikon on the right.

Distortion at 16/14mm (widest):

Distortion at 20/21mm:

Distortion at 24mm:

Vignetting comparison:

Resolution at 16mm for Canon and both 14/18mm for Nikon:

Resolution at 20 and 21mm:

Resolution at 24mm for both:

CA comparison:

So, while the Canon is very good it appears the Nikon is still the king of the ultrawides in the sub-20mm range. At 24mm the Canon is the higher resolving lens.

The one area the Canon is incredibly good is in CA control. Pretty exceptional for an ultrawide.

I guess to sum up, the Canon is slightly better at 24mm and the Nikon is slightly better at wider focal lengths. The new Canon looks very good, it's high on my must-have gear list.
