Can you fix contrast in-camera, if you like the subject's brightness but not the background?

It's easy to fix contrast in post, but what about in camera? I mean using stuff like ISO, aperture, metering, etc... If the subject is exposed perfectly but the background is too dark or light, can I fix that before I shoot?
