Simulated quattro from Merrill

This might be a useless thing to do, but I wanted to know what happens if I tried,

So, I took a SD1 Merrill image, decomposed that into three layers R G and B.

I looked at them and chose to keep the least noisy layer as luma layer and then software binned the other two.

For the example photo I chose, I keep the G layer unmodified and binned G and B (4 pixel to 1 binning) in the software.

Later I re-interpolated and merged the binned Green and Blue with the Original channels and here is the result.

To my eyes, the result looks very similar to quattro images

Original jpg SD1 Merrill image

B and R binned (4:1) and then re-interpolated with the Original green channel.

May be this is one of the ways to get rid of excessive micro contrast on some of the Merrill photos. Plus you get to choose which layer becomes the Luma layer depending on the noise.
