Fireworks on my GX7 (eight photos)
1

Here in the US, July 4th means fireworks. Well, some places celebrate a day early. I know Richmond VA and Richmond CA have their fireworks on the the 3rd. Here a few of mine from here in partly foggy Richmond California. All OOC jpgs from my GX7 and panny 45-150. C&C welcome.

The show started at 9:15, with light still in the sky. There also was a light low cloud cover. Most of the fireworks were below the clouds, but as you can see here, part of it was lost in the clouds. I shot in bulb mode, everything else fixed. I started at at 4-6 seconds exposures...

The top fireworks is what I try for: catching the explosion right after it starts, leaving a small hallow middle. The lower two  exploded after the first, show show the full from the middle burst. In the middle I was usually 6-10 second exposures...

It's hard to catch the blue fireworks (on both my GX7 and D5100). I'd like to PP this one to try to bring out the blue, without messing up the still partially lit sky. Notice the blue firework peeking above the cloud.

Not much difference in direction the fireworks were shot. There was just enough wind to blow the smoke away, and gently curve the bursts to the right.

Finally getting dark! 6 second exposure. As with the other I start the photo as an explosion starts, and hold it for another one or two to also occur, and hopefully get an acceding flare just before I close the shutter. As you can see, this flare doesn't line up with the two vursts on the sides, but almost perfectly with the oldest burst (the one with the biggest hallow middle. If I had just started the photo a little earlier, the hallow part would be smaller, and make the photo so much better.

One of my favorates, probably due to its cleaner look, and the three explosions. I wish the blue one was btighter, though!

Near the start of the Grand Finale. Much busier, so much shorter exposures than earlier in the show, even though the sky was much darker by now. If I have the time, I would have opened my aperture a stop or so to bring out the surroundings, but I didn't want to miss the end.

Soon after the prior photo, they started including flashes, seen here in the lower part. Okay effect live, but it doesn't show in photos well. Too distracting, even though this is the best of the ones with flashes. Also brings out the smoke from all the explosions, flashes and flares, unlike earlier in the show.

I like shooing the Richmond fireworks since I have a great view from a park near home, and the crowds are a lot less than anywhere on the fourth. I'll be going to another fireworks show tomorrow. I hope to find good view without too many heads in the photos.

I had two bummers today, though:

  • I also set up my D5100 in time lapse mode, but it was pointing a little to the right, and the time between the photos were too close together for me to see that.
  • For some reason my GX7 was in jpg standard mode! I usually show in RAW+jpg, so I won't be able to PP these as much as I was hoping to. (This happened to my once before, I'm not sure went/how I put it to jpg only, but I have done it twice now.) I think I was able to shoot a little more frequently in jpg only, one good thing from it, though.

Good luck and have fun to everyone shooting fireworks, and please post them.
